The 3rd most popular breed in the USA

Social
The Golden Retriever is a highly social dog that makes strong social bonds. Goldens are highly adaptive to most lifestyles and are very accepting of other dogs with the proper training and socialization. Their good nature and even temperament make excellent family pets, but they do just as well with a single person. Goldens do exceptionally well in homes with young children, however, young children and dogs need to be well supervised at all times to not only ensure the safety of the child, but the dog as well.
Energy
The Golden Retriever is a very active, easily trained hunting dog. They are most happy being active. Swimming and outdoor play is their love language. They do require outlets for their pent-up energy, or they can become destructive in the home, develop behavior issues, or depression. As much as they enjoy getting outside to stretch their legs, mental stimulation and enrichment is just as important. Obviously, personalities and activity levels fluctuate on an individual basis, but in general a golden does not make a good couch potato.

Care
Golden Retrievers are known for their long flowing coats. As beautiful as they are they require a lot of maintenance. Weekly brushing is a must to prevent mats. Goldens have a double coat and are moderate to heavy shedders. They are classified as seasonal shedders; their most excessive shedding occurs in spring and fall. Those iconic locks also make them prone to hot spots and other skin infections. If not thoroughly dried their long coat coupled with those floppy ears trap moisture also making them extremely prone to ear infections. Generally, with proper care a golden will bless your home for approximately 10-12 years.
